Two Youths Shot and Seriously Injured During Fuel Price Protests in Thika

Tension escalated in Thika on Monday after two youths were reportedly shot and seriously injured during protests against rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living.

The incident happened at BAT Makongeni as demonstrators gathered on the streets demanding lower fuel and electricity prices amid the ongoing nationwide matatu strike and anti-government protests.

Witnesses said chaotic scenes erupted after protesters clashed with anti-riot police, with gunshots and teargas filling the air as officers attempted to disperse the crowds. Videos and images circulating online showed injured protesters being rushed away from the scene by residents and fellow demonstrators.

The two youths were reportedly left with serious injuries following the shooting, sparking anger among residents who accused police of using excessive force against protesters.

The unrest in Thika comes as demonstrations continue spreading across different parts of the country, including Nakuru, Roysambu, Ruiru, and Wote, where protesters have blocked roads, burned tires, and engaged police in running battles throughout the day.

Transport operations remained heavily disrupted as matatu operators and other transport groups continued protesting the latest fuel price increases and the rising cost of living.

The latest shooting has triggered fresh outrage online, with many Kenyans demanding accountability and calling for restraint from security officers handling the protests.
