Two Children Die After Suspected Poisoning by Mother in Kikuyu

Shock and grief have engulfed residents of Kikuyu following a tragic incident in the Zambezi area where two children died after a suspected poisoning incident involving their mother.

According to preliminary reports, the mother is suspected to have administered poison to the children while they were at home. Two of the children later died from the suspected poisoning, while the mother and another child believed to be a relative survived and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Kikuyu.

Authorities confirmed that the children’s father was reportedly away at the time the incident occurred. Police officers responding to the scene launched investigations immediately and have begun collecting evidence and recording witness statements as they seek to establish exactly what happened and what may have led to the tragedy.

The incident has left residents deeply disturbed, with many struggling to understand what could drive such a devastating event involving young children.

Cases involving suspected family poisonings have continued to raise concern across Kenya in recent years. Investigators and mental health experts have repeatedly pointed to rising pressures linked to financial hardship, domestic conflict, untreated mental health struggles, depression, and family stress as factors sometimes connected to similar tragedies.

Earlier this year, other suspected poisoning incidents involving parents and children were also reported in different parts of the country, highlighting growing concerns over mental health support and family welfare systems.

Child protection advocates are now urging authorities to not only investigate the incident thoroughly but also increase access to counseling, crisis intervention, and mental health services for struggling families before situations escalate into tragedy.

As investigations continue, the Kikuyu incident has once again sparked painful national conversations around mental health, family pressures, and the urgent need for stronger social support systems to protect vulnerable children.
