Roysambu Youths Overpower Police During Fuel and Electricity Price Protests
Tension escalated in Roysambu on Monday after angry youths protesting the rising cost of fuel and electricity reportedly overpowered police officers during chaotic demonstrations along Thika Road.
Witnesses said large crowds gathered early in the day, chanting anti-government slogans and blocking sections of the road as frustration over the increasing cost of living continued to grow. The protests later turned chaotic after confrontations broke out between demonstrators and anti-riot police.
Videos circulating online showed protesters advancing toward police lines as officers struggled to contain the crowd. In some clips, police vehicles were seen retreating from the area as protesters continued pushing forward.
Reports indicated that some officers were forced to run back toward Kasarani Police Station after the crowd overwhelmed security teams deployed to disperse demonstrators.
The demonstrations are part of the growing nationwide unrest triggered by recent fuel price hikes and increasing electricity costs, which many Kenyans say are making life unbearable for ordinary citizens. Transport operations in several parts of Nairobi and neighboring towns were heavily disrupted as matatu operators joined the protests and strike actions.
Along sections of Thika Road, burning tires, stones, and barricades caused major traffic snarl ups, leaving thousands of commuters stranded for hours. Businesses in some affected areas also remained partially closed as tensions remained high.
The government has defended the recent fuel price adjustments, citing global oil market pressures and economic challenges, but critics argue the increases are worsening the already high cost of living.
By afternoon, security had been reinforced around Roysambu, Kasarani, and nearby areas as police attempted to regain control and reopen blocked roads. (facebook.com)
