Pro Ruto Central Kenya Governor Regrets Supporting Gachagua Impeachment

A senior Central Kenya governor allied to President William Ruto has admitted that supporting the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was a major political miscalculation that damaged the government’s relationship with the Mt Kenya region.

The governor acknowledged that many residents in the region viewed Gachagua as their strongest voice within government and that his removal created deep political anger across parts of Central Kenya.

The remarks are significant because they come from one of the leaders previously seen as firmly aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration and supportive of the impeachment process at the height of tensions surrounding Gachagua’s fallout with sections of government.

That leader is Anne Waiguru, who publicly admitted that she took part in the process and described the impeachment as more than just a parliamentary matter.

According to Waiguru, the move involved political coordination among leaders and was not simply an independent decision by Parliament. She further admitted that the political consequences of the impeachment were underestimated, especially in Mt Kenya where many voters interpreted the move as an attack on the region’s influence within government.

Her comments are now fueling growing speculation that political realignments are intensifying within Central Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections.

The impeachment of Gachagua remains one of the most divisive political developments within the ruling coalition. While some leaders defended it as necessary due to internal government disagreements, others warned that removing him would alienate a significant section of Mt Kenya voters who strongly identified with him politically.

Since his fallout with government allies, Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as a defender of Mt Kenya political interests, frequently accusing powerful forces within government of sidelining the region.

Waiguru’s remarks now appear to confirm fears among some Kenya Kwanza leaders that the impeachment may have politically backfired in Central Kenya.

Political analysts say the admission is particularly important because it signals growing concern among pro government leaders over shifting public sentiment in Mt Kenya, a region considered critical to President Ruto’s political future.

As political temperatures continue rising, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the battle for Mt Kenya is far from over, and the aftershocks of Gachagua’s impeachment are still shaking the region’s political landscape..
