Police Clash With Protesters at Kihunguro, Ruiru Bypass as Nationwide Matatu Strike Kicks Off

Tension erupted at Kihunguro along the Ruiru bypass on Monday morning after police engaged protesters in running battles as the nationwide matatu strike began across several parts of Kenya.

The protests caused major traffic disruption along sections of the busy road, with stranded commuters forced to walk long distances after matatus withdrew services and demonstrators blocked movement in the area. Videos shared online showed heavy police deployment, crowds gathering on the roads, and officers attempting to disperse protesters as chaos intensified.

The unrest comes amid a nationwide matatu strike announced by sections of public transport operators over rising fuel prices and increasing operational costs. In some areas, matatus were reportedly parked across roads to block traffic flow, leading to severe congestion during the morning rush hour.

Residents around Kihunguro and neighboring estates described the morning as tense, with smoke, whistles, and shouting filling the air as anti-riot police attempted to clear barricades and reopen the roads.

Across Nairobi and its outskirts, thousands of commuters were affected after many PSV operators either joined the strike or reduced operations, leaving bus stops packed with frustrated passengers.

Transport operators have accused the government of failing to address the burden of rising fuel prices, arguing that the cost of doing business has become unbearable for drivers and matatu owners.

By mid-morning, police had intensified patrols around parts of Thika Road and Ruiru as authorities tried to restore normal traffic flow while monitoring the growing demonstrations.
