Boda Boda Rider Killed During Ruiru Fuel Protests as Tensions Escalate,Ni Mbayaa!
Fear and tension gripped parts of Ruiru on Monday after a boda boda rider was reportedly killed during the ongoing nationwide fuel protests and matatu strike that have paralyzed transport across several parts of the country.
The incident happened as chaos erupted along sections of Thika Road and nearby areas, where protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and engaged police in running battles following the nationwide strike by matatu operators and transport groups over rising fuel prices.
Witnesses said the situation quickly turned violent as crowds gathered on major roads, forcing motorists and boda boda riders to flee for safety. Reports circulating online indicated that the rider lost his life amid the unrest, sparking anger and fear among residents and fellow riders.
The nationwide protests began early Monday after transport operators, boda boda associations, taxi drivers, and cargo transporters announced a coordinated shutdown to protest the sharp increase in fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
Across parts of Ruiru, businesses remained closed while commuters were stranded for hours as demonstrations spread across major roads. Police were heavily deployed in several hotspots in attempts to restore calm and reopen blocked highways.
The tragic death of the boda boda rider has added to growing concerns over the escalating violence surrounding the protests, with many Kenyans urging people to avoid unnecessary travel until tensions ease.
“If you hear about strikes, kindly obey and stay safe. Rudisha boda na gari home,” residents warned online as videos of the unrest continued spreading across social media.
