Sonko-Sakaja Private Meeting Sparks 2027 Political Speculation
A private meeting between former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and current Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday evening has triggered fresh political speculation over the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race, with insiders now linking the talks to possible State House-backed political realignments.
Although Sonko publicly insisted that the meeting was “not about politics,” political observers and Nairobi power brokers are reading far deeper into the encounter.
The timing alone has raised eyebrows.
For months, reports have circulated suggesting that State House is keen on consolidating support around Sakaja ahead of 2027, particularly after tensions within Nairobi’s political circles and growing criticism of the governor’s administration. The alleged strategy appears aimed at preventing a divided pro-government vote in the capital.
Sonko remains one of Nairobi’s most influential grassroots political figures despite his impeachment in 2020 and subsequent legal troubles. His political brand still commands loyalty in several city estates, especially among low-income voters who viewed him as a hands-on leader during his tenure at City Hall. Any endorsement from him would significantly strengthen Sakaja’s re-election machinery.
The two leaders have maintained an unpredictable political relationship over the years. Sakaja succeeded Sonko politically in Nairobi leadership circles, first as Nairobi Senator and later as Governor. While they have occasionally appeared cordial in public, there has never been a clearly defined alliance between them.
Sources close to Nairobi politics claim the latest meeting may have focused on easing tensions between rival factions aligned to both camps and creating a united front ahead of what is expected to become a highly contested 2027 race.
The speculation also comes at a time when Sakaja has been drawing increasingly closer to President William Ruto’s administration through cooperation agreements between Nairobi County and the national government. Earlier this year, Sakaja defended his collaboration with State House, insisting it was different from the controversial Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) arrangement that emerged during Sonko’s fallout with the national government.
Critics, however, argue that Nairobi politics is entering familiar territory again, where State House influence could shape who controls City Hall.
Sonko’s denial that politics was discussed has done little to stop the rumours. In Kenyan politics, especially Nairobi politics, “private meetings” between heavyweight figures are rarely viewed as casual conversations. They are usually early negotiations, loyalty tests, or strategic positioning.
And with 2027 slowly approaching, every handshake is now being interpreted as the beginning of a new alliance.
