KNUT Constitution May Lock Sossion Out of Secretary-General Race

A fresh leadership storm is brewing inside the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) after claims that the union’s own constitution could block former Secretary-General Wilson Sossion from contesting in the upcoming race.

Sossion, a seasoned unionist and former KNUT boss, has hinted at a comeback bid for the powerful Secretary-General position. However, internal constitutional provisions governing eligibility, term limits, and the status of union officials may stand in his way.

Constitutional Hurdles

At the heart of the dispute is whether Sossion meets the strict requirements set out in the union’s governing document. Questions have emerged over eligibility criteria tied to union membership status, previous service as a full-time official, and his past deregistration as a teacher following his stint in Parliament.

Critics argue that these constitutional clauses could legally bar him from vying, while his supporters maintain that he remains a legitimate member with sufficient experience to contest.

Leadership Tensions Intensify

The matter has also exposed friction between Sossion and the current KNUT leadership under Secretary-General Collins Oyuu. While no formal ruling has been made on Sossion’s eligibility, insiders say the debate is already shaping into a high-stakes internal battle.

What’s at Stake

The Secretary-General role is central to negotiations with the Teachers Service Commission and national education policy discussions. A contested race  or a blocked candidacy  could trigger internal divisions within one of Kenya’s most influential teachers’ unions.

Whether Sossion’s comeback materializes or is halted by constitutional technicalities now rests on how strictly KNUT chooses to interpret its own rules.
