Death follows Ruto into Kapsabet School For the Deaf

KAPSABET, Nandi County — At least 11 students from the Kapsabet School for the Deaf were injured — and one later confirmed dead — after they fell into an open septic tank inside the school compound on Thursday morning. The mishap occurred as pupils rushed to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto’s motorcade passing by the area.

Eyewitnesses say learners gathered near the edge of an old septic tank — roughly 20 feet long — when its weak cover gave way under the crowd’s weight, causing several children to plunge into the pit. Rescue teams, including county disaster officers, responded promptly and pulled the victims to safety before rushing them to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital.

Hospital officials later confirmed that one of the students died on arrival, while the remaining 10 are receiving treatment for various injuries.

President Ruto Responds on the Ground

Upon learning of the crisis, President Ruto briefly halted his itinerary and visited the scene to express condolences to the school community and families of the affected learners. In a gesture intended to support recovery and reconstruction, he donated KSh 5 million toward improving school infrastructure and safety.

Authorities and school officials have since cordoned off the danger zone and started inspections to prevent further risks. County disaster crews are also supporting long-term care for the injured students.

Safety Concerns Amplified

This incident has renewed calls from parents and local leaders for urgent upgrades to school infrastructure — especially at facilities serving children with special needs. Experts warn that open sewage pits and unstable grounds near pedestrian areas pose grave risks if not properly secured.

At the time of reporting, investigations are still underway to determine whether negligence or inadequate safety measures contributed to the tragic accident. Officials say they will provide updates on the condition of the injured pupils and any actions taken to hold responsible parties accountable.
